Over 35 Years Experience

The key to getting an estimate that you'll be pleased with is;

  • The first step is to sketch, or list out some ideas, of how you would like to use the space in your yard. If you want multiple estimates, you will want the estimates to have the same ideas, or you will not be comparing apples to apples.
  • In the front of the home, customers usually want curb appeal.
  • In the back yard, customers usually want to entertain, have gardens, have play areas, etc.
  • Before you call a landscaper, make a list of what you think you will use the landscaped spaces for.   Do you want area's for entertaining, childrens play areas, etc.
  • Think about purchasing a Landscape Design or Plan.

Tips on getting an Estimate

Have a List of Needs and Wants

Landscape design and Notes

12

You can obtain a landscape design, or simply have a drawing of what you would like to change in your landscape. Make notes of things you'd like added or changed.

Apples to Apples

15

If you are getting several estimates, it helps to have the same design or notes for each landscaper. This way it is a little easier to compare the estimates.

Reasearch

22

Photos help with getting your ideas across. You can share photos you have found with the landscape estimator.

Budget

Budget

12

Have a budget in mind for your landscape estimator. They do not want to suggest materials that are out of your budget. There is a wide range of costs for landscape materials.

Homework

15

Visit landscape supply yards to see what materials cost, and what kind would likely fit in your budget. Keep in mind that labor, equipment fees, deliveries, designs, taxes and insurance will be added to material costs in your estimate.

Big Box Stores

22

Experienced Landscape Contractors do not obtain a lot of landscape supplies at big box stores, such as Home Depot or Menards.

Most of the supplies at these stores are not contractor grade. Meaning they do not have as dense of material, or are smaller versions, and other non contractor grade qualities. They are meant for budget friendly homeowner projects.

Always visit a Landscape Supplier such as Gertens, Patio Town, Rock Gardens, and others.
